Residential asbestos removal

There are three different types of asbestos, white, brown and blue, and they can cause varying degrees of harm if you are exposed to them. Intact asbestos won’t cause you harm as such. But if you are doing any remedial work and uncover some asbestos, for example, if you’re making changes to your central heating system and you find some asbestos lagging, the best course of action is to take advice on whether to have it removed.


If you know you have asbestos in your home, and are planning to have any works carried out you are under a duty of care to inform any contractors before they start work in your home that there are asbestos materials present. This reduces the risk of it being disturbed or damaged.

 

It is not advisable to attempt to remove asbestos yourself. The less exposure you have to asbestos, particularly if it is damaged in any way, the less chance you have of being affected by it. In addition asbestos must, by law, be disposed of as hazardous waste and not mixed with household waste.

All types of asbestos are dangerous but crocidolite and amosite asbestos are known to be more hazardous than chrysotile.

The asbestos types are often referred to by their colour. But, it is very difficult to identify them by colour. Colour and appearance can be affected in many ways, including by heat and chemicals, mixing with other substances and through painting or coating.
